How DataSemantics accelerates and simplifies the project

Using Rever Data Engineers’ reverse engineering technology, the entire migration process is automated: extraction of metadata from the source, creation of new models, transformation, creation of the target database, migration programming, code generation ensuring the smooth operation of old and new applications, control and validation.

Moreover, the target database operates independently of the source, whilst maintaining a real-time link between the digital and the legacy environment. The data migration is done before the migration of the applications, which can be migrated one by one. Thanks to automatically generated connectors to the new digital database, legacy applications still operate smoothly.

Legacy modernisation process

When migrating an IMS database to SQL, it is important to know the structure of the IMS database to be migrated. The Rever Data Engineers connectors allow the structure of the IMS database to be retrieved from the IMS declarations (DBD) and from the declarations of the records defined in the programs (COBOL copy or include PL1). DataSemantics allows to visualise the data mapping and to add semantics to the data.

Once the new SQL database has been designed (supported by the DB-Main tool), our tools will automatically migrate the data from the old legacy to the new digital database using their respective structure.

A wrapper generator will automatically create the programs simulating the access to the old database using the new one. The wrappers (or “data accessors”) simulate all DL1 instructions, including the IMS record format and return codes. This minimises the need to modify existing programs, in most cases no changes to the programs are necessary.

The key advantage of this solution is that the people in charge of program maintenance and evolution do not have to change their programming habits because the logic of the programs is not altered. The solution also makes it possible to develop new programs accessing the new SQL database.
